Maddox was smoking a cigarette, because I guess you still could back then.

In fact, Maddox had the heater dangling from his mouth as he continued to invent the fabulous wealth that would be coming Green's way if only he would abandon Bloomington and move to the Civic Center, which we were going to give him. We didn't know how we were going to give him the building, but we were going to give him the building.

I noticed Green's irritation with the cigarette smoke. Maddox didn't. He was coming up with numbers faster than an auditor at tax time.
